Accounting Manager

The Cato Institute is seeking applications for a full-time position located in DC as a Senior Accountant. The Senior Accountant is responsible for supporting the day-to-day accounting function and month-end close for this $30 million/year non-profit.  Along with the Controller, he/she works to ensure the fiscal health of the organization in support of its mission and strategic objectives.

Responsibilities:

  • Reconciles asset and liability accounts; creates schedules to support journal entries and balances in the general ledger, including prepaid, fixed assets, budget variance reporting.
  • Assists Controller in the preparation and analysis of budgets and monthly financial statements.
  • Compiles and prepares quarterly, semi-annual, annual tax filings to governmental agencies, labor data reporting to various agencies.
  • Prepares schedules and produces the documentation required for annual audit and 990, including 941 reconciliation.
  • Manages month-end close process
  • Generates monthly, quarterly, and annual reports utilizing JetReports
  • Process bi-weekly payroll using Paylocity
  • Reviews and approves cash receipts batches for daily check and cash deposits, weekly credit card batch, monthly book fulfillment and subscription sales, and monthly online deposits.
  • Reviews and approves accounts payable activity ensuring proper and accurate coding of invoices and expense reports.
  • Manages the corporate purchasing card program.

Requirements:

  • Minimum five years of accounting experience, preferably in non-profit organizations. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Experience with accounting software and MS Office is required. 
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics Navision and JetReports (or other financial reporting tools) is desired.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel; expertise in using pivot tables, building multi-variable financial models, and creating macros a major plus.
  • Strong and versatile communication and customer service skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to multi-task, prioritize, and successfully meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work with confidential financial and personal information.
